Fiona Woods, a founder member of the Courthouse Studios Workspace for Artists in Ennistymon will be showing a solo exhibition of her work at the Library Gallery in the De Valera Library in Ennis. While her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, this will be the first time the artist has shown her work in Ennis.
The exhibition will consist of new work, 29 pieces in all, which takes as their starting point the presentation of animals in myths and fairytales. While the work is figurative, it is expressive rather than representational. The archetypal energy of animals is the real theme at work within these paintings and drawings. The smallest piece will be 10" x 14", while the largest will be 68" x 34".
Woods has received a number of awards and commissions. Most recently, her proposal for a Public Artwork for Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare has reached the second stage of the competition (final decision pending). A solo exhibition of her sculpture and installation work will open in Dundalk in Feb. 2001, and travel to other venues later in the year.
Arts officer Siobhan Mulcahy has given great support to this exhibition, providing funding to carry out some temporary alterations to the space, in order to improve the display facilities. County Librarian and sitting Arts Council Member, Noel Crowley, will perform the official opening at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 17th May 2000.
