by Mary Noonan and Peter Burns, The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon.
Official opening 2 November at 8 pm. Peter Burns makes paintings and
objects in a variety of materials. The paintings have sculptural elements
and the objects are strongly linked to the practice of painting. Mary
Noonan employs a variety of working methods, though most of her work
is drawing based. The body of work she shows in the Courthouse Gallery
comes from research into Irish folklore and superstition relating to
“fairy-faith”, particularly from the late nineteenth and
early twentieth century. November, traditionally seen as the month of
the dead, provides the backdrop for the work shown in this exhibition.

Hounds' Hollow Productions perform 'SPARKS' at the Royal Spa
Hotel, Lisdoonvarna.
Hounds' Hollow Productions, a theatre company based near Lisdoonvarna,
will perform their play 'SPARKS' in The Royal Spa Hotel, Lisdoonvarna
on Saturday, October 27th at 8pm. The play finished a run at Galway's
Town Hall Theatre at the beginning of July, to great acclaim and featured
as part of the Volvo Ocean Race - Global Village as well as Galway Fringe
Festival 2012. 'Sparks' is a one-man, dark comedy starring Darren Killeen
(‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Ros Na Rún’...).
The story is told through the eyes of Gerry, an electrician at the end
of his tether. The audience is drawn into Gerry's world, as he replays
a day in his life as he remembers it. He is a man pushed to the very
edge of his sanity by the eccentric characters around him, and the realities
of economic meltdown. With echoes of Samuel Beckett and Enda Walsh,
it is original Irish drama at its best. Tickets cost €10 and can
be purchased at the Royal Spa Hotel before the performance. Contact
Éibhleann on 087 6365766 for further details.

Ennistymon.

Deirdre O’Mahony, Francis Whelan, Sean Whelan) in The Courthouse
Gallery, Ennistymon from Sept 28th to Oct 25th. The Mapping Group has
been meeting on a weekly basis from September to May since the X-PO
space opened in 2007. During that time the group hase traced the history
of human occupancy as shown on maps, in documents and in the ruins of
houses, ‘cabhails’ and castles of Killinaboy Parish. The
present exhibition represents the culmination of the research; a combined
re-presentation of documentation of the names of the householders of
Killinaboy Parish for the past 150 years approx. These names are sourced
from the Griffith Valuation sheets of 1855, the subsequent cancelled
Valuation Sheets and from local knowledge and folklore. The names provided
may be the owners, occupiers or rated occupiers. In its combined form
the exhibition marks an important stage in the group’s research
into the townlands of Killinaboy. Gallery opening times: Tuesday –
Saturday from 12 – 5 pm. This exhibition has been kindly supported
by the NUIG Centre for Irish Studies, GMIT, X-PO and Clare County Arts

Drawing into Painting - Working from Life with Maeve McCarthy
RHA
Burren College of Art, Ballyvaughan
This course will examine drawing as process and progression to painting
Working from life and beginning with drawing from observation, with
an emphasis on tone and mark making, drawings are then translated into
painting: progressing from tone, to temperature to colour. Emphasis
is placed on the role of colour, on the transition of tone and of line
towards colour, how it can be handled and also the advantages of using
a limited palette. Composition and the use of colour is an important
part of study: quick composition sketches, how colour and surface are
modified by the quality of the paint and the tools used. Discussion
on how reference material and imaginative sources can be integrated
with working from life. Throughout this process each person is encouraged
in their individual way of working. Weather permitting the group can
work in the landscape, though a studio will be set up for model and
each person’s work space. There will be discussion on painting
surfaces, methods of preparing paper, gesso, canvas; Imprimatura and
a short introduction to hand-made gesso Although oil paint is preferred,
acrylic and other media can be used. Maximum 12 people in class.Maeve
McCarthy has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is represented
in public collections in Ireland, including a portrait of Maeve Binchy
in the National Gallery of Ireland . She has exhibited in The BP National
Portrait Exhibition, London. She is a member of the RHA (Royal Hibernian
Academy) and lives between An Chorca Dhuibhne, Co Kerry and Dublin.

‘Nothing to See Here’ - An exhibition of photography
by Seán McInerney
Foyer of the Clare Museum, Ennis
“Nothing to see here” is the follow on from his very successful
“Moments” exhibition held last year in The Gallery, Scariff
Public Library, Scarriff, Co. Clare by local amateur photographer Seán
McInerney. This body of work “Nothing to See Here” is Seán’s
effort to display to all what is taken for granted if we only take the
time out to appreciate the world around us. As the artist explains,
“Nothing to see here” and previously “Moments”,
is how I like to refer to the wide ranging array of photographs I have
taken since I first got ‘the bug’ of going out in all sorts
of weather, sometimes at unsociable hours of the day and night in the
hopes of discovering the perfect photographic shot. “I hope that
the selection I am putting on display does no disappoint and will be
an inspiration to many people, young and old alike”. Cllr. Pat
Hayes will officially open the exhibition on Saturday, July 28th at
2p.m. All are welcome to attend. For further information contact the
artist directly at: mcinerney.sean@yahoo.com

West Cork – The Premier of a Short Film
The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon
The poem “West Cork” by the late Seán Dunne is a
remarkable homage to an idiosyncratic form of public worship which is
still practised in Ireland today - the veneration of holy wells, rag
trees and curiously-shaped stones. The poem is set in the magical St
Gobnait's monastic site in Ballyvourney in Cork, a great magnet for
pilgrims right down to the present day. St Gobnait is the patron saint
of bees. Three North Clare based people came together this spring to
make a short 5 minute film version of the poem. Carles Casasin of Ballyvaughan
filmed and edite, Mick O'Riordan of Doolin provided voice and original
soundtrack whilst Tony Kirby of Kilnaboy produced. The film will be
launched at the Courthouse in Ennistymon on Friday the 18th of May at
8.00 pm. There will be a fine cast of North Clare voices on hand on
the evening to enrich the event with song, music and thoughts. M.C.
on the evening will be John Morgan (Kilfenora) and guests will include
Fr Denis Crosby (Liscannor), Phil Gaston (Kilnaboy) and Susan Daly (Doolin).
The event coincides with Ennistymon's first ever Dylan Thomas Literary
Festival whick takes place over the same weekend. All are welcome for
what promises to be a memorable evening. More information 065 7071630

New archaeological discoveries in Moneen Cave, Ballyvaughan:
insights into life in the Burren in Bronze Age and Medieval times with
Marion Dowd.
Burrenbeo Trust March Talk, 8.30pm at Tubber Village Hall
In June 2011 a group of cavers made exciting archaeological discoveries
in a cave near Ballyvaughan. They found Bronze Age pottery, bones and
a unique antler hammer-head - the only one of its kind from Ireland.
This led to an archaeological excavation of the site in August with
the recovery of further pottery, animal bones and a flint flake. A poignant
discovery was also made: the skeleton of an adolescent. Overall the
excavation has shed light on the people who lived in the area during
the Bronze Age and the Medieval period. This talk is open to everyone
to attend. It is free for Burrenbeo Trust Members and €5 from non-members.
For more information please email trust@burrenbeo.com

Red Couch Space, Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery
Terrascope is an exhibition of work by Jackie Maurer and Fiona Woods,
featuring new work in the form of paintings, drawings and ceramics.
Jackie Maurer is a ceramicist who works intuitively with forms, sometimes
pushing them to their limits. She uses various methods to apply colour
and pattern to the surface of her works. For Terrascope she will show
a collection of recent porcelain objects that play with ideas of curve
and edge. Fiona Woods is a visual artist who works primarily in sculpture
and public art. For Terrascope she will show her first collection of
paintings and drawings for ten years. These small, intensely personal
works reference Woods’ passion for Folk Art, whilst also reflecting

The Next Mind Meitheal meeting,
X-PO, Kilnaboy
The Next ‘Mind Meitheal’ will take place at X-PO on Wed
11th Jan, 8pm - 9.30. If you cannot attend but are interested in proceedings
please email deomahony@gmail.com. The idea of a ‘Mind Meitheal’
was originally conceived by artist Deirdre O’Mahony as a form
of knowledge exchange. Stimulating and bringing together a broad cross-section
of knowledge forms - local place-based, academic and cultural –
‘Mind Meitheal’, is a think-tank that seeks to generate
discussion and imagination within groups of diverse participants. The
broad objective is to create a space where different knowledge forms
have parity in the design of creative strategies for social, cultural,
economic and natural sustainability. ‘Mind Meitheal’ involves
regular participants and those who drop in and out voluntarily. In an
effort to find answers to questions discovered by the group, ‘Mind
Meitheal’ can also proactively seek out participants to share
particular experiences and knowledge forms. Missing pieces of the puzzle
under consideration are discovered, negotiated, and reconciled in the
group process. The ‘Mind Meitheal’ process is routinely
opened up to influences and knowledge forms outside the group. Using
email, accounts of club gatherings are circulated locally and across
a broad range of academic, cultural and social institutions in order
to invite responses that might contribute to new insights. ‘Mind
Meitheal' originally came to life in the context of efforts to sustain
the social, cultural, economic and natural land/scape of the Burren
at the X-PO project in Kilnaboy Co. Clare. ‘Mind Meitheal’
is open to all interested parties and takes place every month.
