Peter Blodeau Art Exhibition, Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Having spent the best part of the last two decades living and working
in Berlin and Paris as well as travelling in Europe and Egypt, USA and
Cuba, Peter Blodeau's experiences of large metropolitan environments
and the way in which people live in and interact with these spaces has
been the subject both of his visual work as well as theoretical research.
Working always in situ, he has produced hundreds of studies, drawings
and water colours which consider both how things appear and what lies
beneath that appearance. He tries to become one with the subject, observing
it in totality, ignoring nothing. He does not select and reject, but
delights in the sometimes boring ordinariness, even vulgarity of a scene:
litter, street signs, telephone-wires and pylons. Everything is present
because it points to humanity. His paintings are true to the enviroment
they have come from and allows one to picture the scenes as he saw them.
The exhibition will be on display till the 18th October during normal
opening hours.

in his upcoming talk to the North Clare Historical Society at the Courthouse
Gallery, Ennistymon at 8pm. If you're interested in the Famine, the

Eleanor McEvoy plays Cultúrlann Sweeney Kilkee
Ireland’s internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Eleanor
McEvoy released her latest album ‘STUFF’ in May, 2014. The
collection is the result of a purposeful mission by the Wexford-based
singer to find and release the ‘stuff’ the fans wanted but
couldn’t find. Eleanor says, “After I’d tracked down
single mixes, audiophile tracks and songs I’d written and performed
on other artists records, the project soon took on a life of its own,
with more tracks recorded and everything re-mastered. The album named
itself STUFF. ” An eleven-track miscellany, Stuff’s tell
tales of unrequited love, lust and eloquent farewell; a heady brew of
caustic observation laced with wit and wry self-deprecation typical
of multi-instrumentalist McEvoy, all delivered in the Irish star’s
rich, lilting voice. Eleanor’s performances are intimate, emotional,
uplifting affairs in which she explores soul, love and humour, using
own compositions and interpretations from other songbooks, with her
unique voice and beautiful playing. Show starts at 8 pm at Cultúrlann
Sweeney Kilkee on the 29th August. Tickets are €16/€14 and
may be got at the Kilkee Box Office on (065) 9060769 or at Glór

Merriman Summer School 2014, Glór, Ennis
This year's theme is 'Emotional Life in Ireland'. It is a timely topic
for a country which has yet again been dealing with the aftermath of
trauma as we listen to stories of hidden pregnancies, secret births
and unacknowleged deaths. How do we deal with our emotions and their
consequences? Are we better at it now than we have been? What legacies
have been left by our difficulty in understanding and reluctance to
deal with our emotions? These are some of the areas for discussion at
this year's Merriman Summer School. The full programme and details about
speakers are available on www.merriman.ie.
Most events take place in Ennis' cultural venue, Glór, with tickets
and reservation available through www.glor.ie.

William's Mirror - An exhibition of photography by William Glynn
Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee
August sees the return to the gallery in Cultúrlann Sweeney,
Kilkee of the popular local photographer, William Glynn. William's Mirror
is an exhibition of photographs generally of aspects of the Loop Head
peninsula, but with the odd one or two from other places as well. It
reflects the casual beauty of the natural forms and patterns all around
us and which often go unnoticed. An ancient Greek philosopher said that
everything flows, nothing is still. Even the weathered stones and the
cliffs round about us change from day to day, from moment to moment,
and of course the sea is perpetual motion. These photographs try to
capture something of the mood and feel of living here. Born in Kilrush
and brought up in Kilkee, Co. Clare, William spent most of his working
life teaching in the UK. Returning to Ireland on retirement his hobby,
photography, became a serious pursuit. He loves the stark beauty of
the West Clare coastline with its ever changing sea and sky and abundance
of wild life.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra, Culturlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Kilkee Civic Trust presents The Irish Chamber Orchestra at Cultúrlann
Sweeney Kilkee at 8pm. Tickets €20. The Irish Chamber Orchestra
has a reputation second to none both at home and abroad. Katherine Hunka
directs this exciting performance of exceptional diversity that offer
a kaleidoscopic range of music, combining old with newer sounds. Gidon
Kremer’s arrangement of Alfred Schnittke’s Polka is racy
but quite funny. His comical Moz-Art à la Haydn grew from Schnittke’s
extraordinary ability to fragment and reassemble diverse music in new
and unexpected ways. Two colliding worlds, from the clarity of Mozart
to the chaos of Schnittke, make for one great parody. Haydn’s
seldom heard duet demonstrates great virtuosity from the soloists. Mozart’s
Divertimento in B is full of sparking and dramatic themes, a shining
example of the young composer’s most enchanting string music.
Tchaikovsky wrote his Serenade on impulse “from the heart”.
As one of the all-time great tunesmiths and masters of dance music,
these talents radiate in his effervescent and much loved Serenade. Tickets
can be purchased from the box office (065) 9060769 or online at Glór

'Seasons, Species & Patterns of a North East Atlantic Rocky
Shore' Book Launch
Culturlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Professional Artist, Author, Habitat Researcher and Proprietor of the
Leisure Learning Loophead Summer Hedge School in West Clare, Carmel
T. Madigan is set to shortly launch her new book ‘Seasons, Species
& Patterns of a North East Atlantic Rocky Shore’. This book
is based on a research and photographic journey at Ross Beach, Loophead,
which is adjacent to the famed tourist spot of the Bridges of Ross.
Her parents, Mai and PJ Magner together with at least ten ancestral
generations of the family have lived adjacent to Ross beach, and were
coastal farmers, fishermen and victims of the ocean. In the book Ms
Madigan reflects on the history and uses of the beach through time,
as handed down from one generation to the other, including the fact
that during the Famine era, both Limpets and Periwinkles had become
extinct here. Together with her son James, they researched the beach
at low Spring Tide throughout the year over a period of five years,
in response to the fact that although living so close, so little was
locally known as to the beach’s inhabitants, its flora (including
seaweeds) and fauna. During the course of this research, they unearthed
more than eighty shore living creatures together with over one hundred
seaweeds, lichens and flora species. The book is due to be officially
launched at Culturlann Sweeney, Kilkee on Wednesday July 23rd next at
6.30pm. The book will be launched by Dr. Prannie Rhatigan – author
‘Irish Seaweed Kitchen’ The book will be available from

‘Nature Spirit – A Collaboration’, Aan Exhibition
of New Works by Carmel T. Madigan.
Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Having grown up at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean at Loophead, coupled
with the continuous household discussion on the area and its social
and economic history, generated by her parents who between them have
spent 190 years living here, Carmel T. Madigan nee Magner’s artworks
have continuously been influenced by Loophead, its wild elements, rugged
rocks, windswept territory. Her new batch of works have departed from
the elements and the landscape somewhat, and have been infiltrated by
social and economic history from the area, her own recent research and
educational endeavours and her travels. This mix of new work , created
in a spirited, ethereal style, combines stories like the ladies travelling
to Biddy Gallery’s House for their T-cup readings, which yielded
outcomes that may have suggested an impending parcel from America, or
an impending match, or the birth of twins. The works are reflective
on her current research work, free floating, abstract yet familiar,
and reminiscent of Loophead in its bygone days as handed down by Mai
and PJ Magner. The works are created on paper and canvas. Tel: 065-9090769,

dance and magic with a strong ancestral Asian-legend theme. The story

awes and stuns, taking the audience away to another land, in another
time. This atmospheric multidisciplinary piece is suitable for all people
of all ages. (Contains strobe lighting) Tickets €7/€5 Family

Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Miltown Malbay
The Willie Clancy Summer School of Traditional Music is a week long
summer school in traditional music and set dance held annually at Miltown
Malbay with a programme of classes, workshops, lectures, recitals and
concerts devoted to the study and practice of Irish traditional music,
song and dance. The first and biggest of such events, it commemorates
the town's best-known uilleann piper, Willie Clancy, and has been running
since just after his death in 1973. The idea was initiated by Clancy
himself, and implemented within six months by teacher Muiris Ó
Rócháin in collaboration with CCE's timire ceoil Séamus
Mac Mathúna and local musicians Martin Talty, Paddy Joe McMahon
and Junior Crehan. The school is focused around the teaching of instruments
and set dancing in formal classes, but stresses the value of the oral/aural
tradition. In its fleadh-style volume of music-making in bars it has
become something of a Mecca in the music, its retinue of up to a hundred
and fifty teachers, and hundreds of improving and competent musicians,
dancers and singers drawing in thousands of listeners. Contact Harry

Mundy, Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee, at 8pm
Irish singer/songwriter Mundy is one of a number of artists to successfully
make the transition from street busking in Dublin to international stardom
during the '90s. Mundy's mainly acoustic, folk-based pop/rock has been
compared to Damien Rice and Josh Ritter; however, his style is more
upbeat and celebratory than either, and his jangle pop influence and
tendency to experiment with unconventional sonic textures and beats
further distinguishes him. He more recently performed for President
Obama, and played support with Imelda May and
Emmylou Harris. With huge radio hits like July and Mexico, Mundy promises
a great evening’s entertainment. There will be new songs as well
as lots of favourites!

Mary Coughlan: The Whole Affair. Cultúrlann Sweeney Kilkee
A lot has been written and a lot has been said, whispered, recounted,
alleged, supposed and presumed. It’s all quite forgotten now and
the songs remain the same, they remain a testament to Mary Coughlan’s
seemingly timeless and endless talent. Her smoky, bluesy, boozy drawl
has always been a seduction, no matter what the subject. The vocal marrying
of sardonic wit, visceral rage, orgiastic between the sheets passion,
the tenderest of sorrowful regrets- this is Mary’s talent. Regardless
of the elements she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease, Mary’s
voice has always been an unforeseen, sudden seduction. This is why she
is so loved. Tickets cost €16/€14 and are available from Kilkee
Box Office on (065)9060769 or you can book online at www.glor.ie.
The show starts at 8pm.

‘What’s Left Behind’ - An Exhibition of Artwork
by Nathalie el Baba & Emma Stewart-Liberty.
Clare Museum, Ennis
Taking as their theme “what’s left behind” this exhibition
brings together the work of two Clare based artists, Nathalie El Baba
and Emma Stewart-Liberty. Nathalie’s work looks at the narrative
of people’s lives, re?ecting on the physical evidence of emigration
represented by the empty bedrooms and left objects of Ireland’s
young generation. Emma’s work is about the close observation of
the minutiae of plants, in particular those parts that often are dismissed
and overlooked once the ?ower has died. Both artists work from the found
objects they come across in their daily activities, Emma’s work
being drawn from a variety of natural forms, such as seaweed roots from
the hightide line, discarded twigs or fallen petals, while in her collection
of work Nathalie combines both the ‘found’ objects and ‘left’
ones.

Liz Carroll plays Cultúrlann Sweeney Kilkee
Hot on the heels of the release of her most recent album, On the Offbeat,
the Grammy nominated traditional fiddle-player, Liz Carroll, has teamed
up with two of our most respected musicians to undertake a short Irish
tour this May. Chicago native Liz will be joined by guitarist Seán
Óg Graham who plays with the band Beoga and Cookstown-born bass
player Trevor Hutchinson, known for his work with Lunasa and, previously,
The Waterboys. Liz has had a remarkable century. Her 2009 recording
with John Doyle, Double Play, was nominated for a 2010 Grammy, which
made Liz the first American-born artist nominated for playing Irish
music - ever! On St. Patrick's Day 2009, Liz travelled to Washington,
D.C., to play for fellow Chicagoan Barrack Obama at the annual St. Patrick's
Day luncheon. In 2005, Liz became a member of String Sisters, a sextet
of fiddlers from America, Ireland, Shetland and Norway. Their 2009 Live
album was shortlisted for a Grammy. Liz's first duet album with John
Doyle, In Play, caused Sing Out! Magazine's Rob Weir to claim "Liz
Carroll's recordings induce joy and admiration that exhaust this reviewer's
feeble descriptions". Previous to that were two solo albums, Lake
Effect and Lost in the Loop, which drew on Liz's homeplace of Chicago
as the influence for an extraordinary outpouring of new compositions.
The 2000 Lost in the Loop album saw the Irish Echo proclaim Liz as the
Traditional Musician of the Year. Liz has been awarded a National Heritage
Award Fellowship as a "Master Traditional Artist who has contributed
to the shaping of American artistic traditions and preserving the cultural
diversity of the United States". Show Starts 8pm on Sunday 01st

concession. For more information and tickets call Kilkee Box Office

Gerry Fenniman Exhibition, Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Gerard Fenniman was born in New York and raised in Barefield, Ennis,
Co Clare. He attended Limerick School of Art and Design where he graduated
in 1992. He moved to London and then New York after graduating before
eventually settling back in West Limerick in 2008. Since then, he has
exhibited regularly, using wood as his main material. He choses to explore
various concepts and ideas through his woodworking process, including
furniture making and wood turning. His work is based on spirituality
and belief, some pieces relating to literal practices and expressions,
others more contemplative in their origin. Each work, however, is explored
through visual language and metaphor. The central piece on display in
this exhibition relates to a particular inscription often found on penal
crosses. He held his first exhibition in Clare in 20 years last year
in the Clare Museum before going on to exhibit in the Gallery at Scariff
Library. This exhibition is supported by Clare Arts Office and can be
viewed in the foyer of Cultúrlann Sweeney during opening hours.

This year, 2014, marks the 40th anniversary of the first Fleadh Nua
in Ennis and since 1974 it has developed from a 3 day event to a festival
spanning 8 days, with more than 120 separate events, where there is
a welcome for everyone. There are many Irish traditional festivals organised
throughout the summer months but there are few people who will dispute
that Fleadh Nua which started in Dublin in 1970, is the forerunner of
them all. The concept of bringing together concerts, céilithe,
music, song and dancing workshops, street entertainment, and much more
was innovative in its time. However, it's still a winning formula today
as evidenced by the thousands of visitors who flock to the festival
every May for a week of unsurpassed traditional entertainment. Contact

Clare Youth Theatre perform in Glór, Ennis
Clare Youth Theatre’s annual production takes place in Glor on
Sunday 13th April at 3pm when 30 young people from all over the county
will perform on stage. Many will star in Kohl, set in a New York Speakeasy
in the early 1930's. A story of intrigue and espionage, glamour and
tears, longing and laughter, Kohl takes us on a journey through the
smoky, bourbon-soaked streets of 1930s New York, where cover-ups are
commonplace, and mystery lurks at every street corner. From the seedy
streets of New York, the Youth Theatre will then bring us deep into
our imagination as 'Hester Hunts the Night Wolf'. Devised and directed
by Clare Youth Theatre member Tess Hughes, it explores the works of
fables such as the Grimm's fairy tales and and uses their common motifs
to tell a story of love, fear and courage. Clare Youth Theatre is an
initiative of the Arts Office of Clare County Council. This performance
provides a wonderful insight to the work that Clare Youth Theatre does
all year round. It will be of particular interest to those who may be
interested in joining Clare Youth Theatre next September as it will
give both parents and interested young people a good feel as to what
can be achieved when a group of like minded individuals gather together
in a safe and creative environment. Tickets from Glor at Tel: 065 6843103.

Tim King Art Exhibition, Culturlann Sweeney, Kilkee
Tim King is a self-taught artist living in West Clare. He is originally
from Limerick and moved to West Clare ten years ago with his wife and
family. He always had an interest in drawing and in art in general,
but it was not until later in life that he found out that he was good
at drawing. His paintings are mostly landscapes in watercolour and mostly
of the surrounding area where he lives in West Clare. He likes to work
out in the open from sketches, and then when he gets back to the studio
do a full painting of the sketch he has just done. He mostly works in
watercolour but since he has started an adult education in Kilrush he
has recently started using chalk pastels, charcoal and biro. His watercolours
are all framed and mounted professionally and come in a range of sizes.
He has also done a few pastel copies of the famous paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec
which he found very interesting. His paintings range in price from €200
for the watercolours and for the bigger pastels €250. He also has
copies of the original watercolours in mounts only for €35. Contact:

‘Metamorphosis’ Exhibition by Lori de Cartret Sheehan,
Scariff Public Library
Lori de Cartaret has been working on these paintings for the last 5
years since she started taking her passion for art more seriously. It
has been a cathartic journey of soul searching, self-expression, tears
and joy, and a huge learning curve in the methods of creating art. She
has looked into her past, her memories, dreams and fears, confronting
a few ghosts on the way, but having done so she has felt free and able
to step out of the shadows of the past to look ahead. Her latest paintings
are of the beauty and light which she is lucky enough to observe in
the wild West of Ireland and on her many travels to France. She now
wishes to share them with you. Website: http://loridecarteretartist.weebly.com

The Burrenbeo Trust finishes up its 'Tea and Talks' in Tubber series
with an apt subject matter, Tea! Join us for the last in the series
for this season at Tubber Village Hall. Juanita Browne is a Zoology
graduate who migrated into print media and television after university.
She published her first book Ireland’s Mammals in 2005. Besides
wildlife, one of her other great loves is a nice cup of tea. Neither
an addict nor connoisseur, she simply enjoys plain Irish tea and, most
importantly, the chat that comes with it. Through her new book ‘Put
the Kettle On – The Irish Love Affair with Tea’, Juanita
investigates our tea habits and the rules, the warmth, the comfort and
the craic in every brew across Ireland. We will be reminded of tea rationing
during the war, tea drunk from bottles in the hayfield and sweet billycans
on the bog. We hear about tea after childbirth, football matches and
card games, tea at the office canteen, hospitals and wakes. Tea as the
centre of many community events. More information on her book can be
viewed here. Juanita would be delighted to hear any tea-related stories
from the crowd. This talk is open to everyone. However, it is free for
Burrenbeo Trust Members and a suggested €5 donation from non-members.

identity. Cormac O’Neill is a painter. His painting is intuitive
