KILFENORA CEILI BAND CENTENARY
A unique event in music and social history will take place in County Clare,
Ireland from 23-26 April, when the centenary will be celebrated of the
Kilfenora Ceili Band (KCB).
Few orchestras or musical ensembles can claim a hundred years of history
– and indeed the Kilfenora has its origins in a village fife &
drum band stretching back into the 1870s. Contributing to its uniqueness
are its roots in a web of local families who have supplied many of its
members over the century. Also unique is the KCB’s feat of winning
at the Fleadh Cheoil three years running on two occasions – 1954-6
and 1993-5.
The festival will run from Thursday 23 April to Sunday 26 April in Kilfenora.
The main events include:
- a céilí with the Four Courts band –
featuring several past players of the KCB (23.2)
- a céilí with the Kilfenora band itself,
in the hall that past members helped to build in 1954 (24.2)
- a lecture by band-member Garry Shannon on the history
of the band, followed by a gala concert where the Kilfenora will be
joined by special guests (25.2)
- recitals by Kilfenora’s talented , prize-winning
youth players
- a Sean Nós and Step Dancing workshop for children
- an exhibition of the history of the band and of music
in the area
- a mass to remember late members of the band over
the decades, followed by unveiling of a memorial plaque (27.2)
- a launch of the Kilfenora’s new CD “Century”
(27.2)
- a guest appearance by the Tulla Ceili Band, historic
rivals of the KCB who celebrated 60 years in 2008 (27.2)
- a finale with the Kilfenora, featuring and honouring
its past members (27.2)
- singing and instrumental sessions in the pubs throughout
the weekend with many fine musicians from North Clare and beyond.
A special memorial poster will be on sale during the weekend,
among other items. The band will feature in a RTE documentary to be shown
on 10 March, and on the Late Late show on 13 March.
The programme of events will be viewable shortly at www.kilfenoraceiliband.com.
