INTERSECTIONS is a new series of small works by Deirdre OMahony which continues her exploration of aspects of the landscape of rural Ireland.
This work began while on a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo and continues her practice of using direct process to give her found imagery; in this instance dipping boards covered with gesso into bogholes and pools of algae and using the resulting trace to suggest a direction for the work. The resulting images resemble histological images of different virus.
Deirdre OMahony was born in Limerick, studied at the Regional Technical College, Galway and graduated from St. Martins School of Art, London in 1979. She has exhibited on a regular basis ever since, both in London, where she lived until 1992 and in Ireland. She received a prestigious international Pollock/Krasner bursary in 1996 and an Arts Council bursary in 1997. Her work is in the OPW State art collection as well as the collections of Shannon Development, Limerick City Gallery of Art, University of Limerick and numerous private and public collections throughout the world. She is currently full time assistant lecturer in painting at the Galway and Mayo Institute of Technology.
