INTERSECTIONS is a new series of small works by Deirdre O’Mahony which continues her exploration of aspects of the landscape of rural Ireland.

This work began while on a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo and continues her practice of using direct process to give her ‘found’ imagery; in this instance dipping boards covered with gesso into bogholes and pools of algae and using the resulting trace to suggest a direction for the work. The resulting images resemble histological images of different virus.

Deirdre O’Mahony was born in Limerick, studied at the Regional Technical College, Galway and graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art, London in 1979. She has exhibited on a regular basis ever since, both in London, where she lived until 1992 and in Ireland. She received a prestigious international Pollock/Krasner bursary in 1996 and an Arts Council bursary in 1997. Her work is in the OPW State art collection as well as the collections of Shannon Development, Limerick City Gallery of Art, University of Limerick and numerous private and public collections throughout the world. She is currently full time assistant lecturer in painting at the Galway and Mayo Institute of Technology.

In 1996 O’Mahony had her first major Irish exhibition, Erratics, in the Guinness HopStore in Dublin. The installation toured to the Limerick City Gallery of Art, Context Gallery, Derry, the Model Arts Centre, Sligo and part was seen in the Metaphor for Ireland exhibition at Boston University Fuller Art Gallery, USA.

She was also chosen for New Found Landscape, an exhibition of contemporary art at the Kerlin Gallery December 97, Scoip in Siamsa Tíre in 98, curated by Hugh Mulholland of the Ormeau Baths Gallery and was selected for the EV+A 98 and 99 exhibitions held annually in Limerick curated by Paul M. O’Reilly and Jeannie Rohatyn Greenberg respectively. In January 2000 O’Mahony had a critically acclaimed solo exhibition titled Wrap and retrospective at Galway Arts Centre.

Deirdre’s plans for the future include an exhibition of some of the WRAP series at the Lukas Gallery Fairfeld University Connecticut USA in January 2001. She has been nominated as a participating artists in the Irish and Scottish ‘Leabhar Mór na Gaeilge’ millennium project, a collaboration between 50 Irish and Scottish artists with poets writing in Gaelic. The end product will be a bound volume of artworks and poetry which will move between Scotland and Ireland on an annual basis. She will exhibit at the Context Gallery in Derry again in February 2001 with the Wrap series.
