To commemoration the 100th anniversary of the death of Oscar Wilde on 30 November 1900,
the Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing, situated in 21 Westland Row, the dramatist;s
birthplace, is hosting an international symposium as a tribute to the intellectual,
cultural and creative legacy of the Wilde family, not only Oscar, but his father Sir
William Wilde and his mother, Speranza.
Under the patronage of Merlin Holland as representative of the Wilde family, the Symposium
brings together scholars, writers and theatre professionals to celebrate and explore what
the Wilde's gave to Dublin, to Ireland and to the world. Associated with the
occaaion, besides the keynote lectures and the panel discussions of the Symposium itself,
are two specially commissioned creative events: a new play by Thomas Kilroy, and a
theatrical adaptation of Oscar Wilde fairytales for school
children by the Storytellers Theatre Company.
