Scoil Realt na Mara

Clare Champion, Friday, 28th April 2000

The Convent Primary School and Boys National School amalgamated in September 1998 to form Realt na Mara. The school is situated in the centre of Kilkee - a beautiful seaside resort.

The school aims to cultivate respect for each individual child, his/her background and needs, enabling them to be well adjusted with a healthy self-image.

The staff consists of eight teachers: Maureen Flynn, Infants; Mrs. Mary Troy, First class; Sr. Mona Cleary, Second class; Fionnuala Murnane, Third class; Mr. Mark Maye, Fourth class; Anne Hogan, Fifth class; Sr. Marie Ryan, Sixth class and Principal. The school is very lucky to have Helen Cunningham as remedial teacher on the staff. The school is fortunate to have good relationship with Kilkee Social Development Association and has a caretaker and classroom assistant under a FÁS scheme.

Scoil Realt na Mara has a great variety of activities, as well as strong emphasis on the academic side of life. Extra activities include computer classes, Irish dancing, swimming, athletics, football, hurling, basketball and speech and drama. Children are encouraged and trained to participate in local Community Games. This is possible because of a very generous involvement of many parents and helpers. There is a branch of the Credit Union in the school to encourage saving for the rainy day. Children also participate in Credit Union art and quiz competitions.

Involved in 'Building for Future' - through active help and support of many friends, the school will participate in a project 'My Favourite Building'. Fifth class are doing a project on the old Convent - which was the focal point of the community for many years.

Currently there is on-going fund-raising for the proper development of the school field, 'The Green Schools Campaign', in conjunction with Clare County Council. Through this involvement they aim to foster a sense of responsibility and love for the environment among the children.

The school looks forward with great hope and confidence to the future, in working together as a group - parents, teachers and pupils and the wider community, so that our school will always be a "Shining Star" in our community.
