Christmas Fun at the Library

Clare Champion, Friday, 8th December 2006

Christmas stories, craft time and children's games will be the order of the day at the Sean Lemass Library next week. On Tuesday and Thursday at 4.00pm, there will be a Christmas craft session for children aged between 7 and 12 years. Events are free, as is the children's membership of the library.

Also, Eureka is a popular science book promotion currently available for both children and adults in the library. The books in the promotion, that have either been shortlisted or have won the Aventis Prize for science books, celebrates the very best in popular science writing for adults and children. "The prize encourages the reading, writing and publication of high quality accessible science books and it is managed by The Royal Society, the UK National Academy of Science", a spokeswoman for the library said.

The highest standard of storytelling skills and scientific expertise are now expected of Aventis prize candidates. The books are entertaining and also communicate science. The adult books chosen for the prize assume no special training beyond school leaving age.

One of the judges, Terry Pratchett, said that for him, the most important quality was their 'sheer readability'. They include books about how the universe, or humanity, or life began, how and why people behave as they do. The selection is a sample of the popular science books that are available through Clare County Library service. Co-operation was received from various publishers and The Royal Society for this promotion.
