Neylon Calls for Elderly Centre on Post Office Field

Clare Champion, Friday, 15th December 2006

A daycare centre for the town's elderly should be built on the site of the Post Office Field in conjunction with plans for a new library, Councillor Frankie Neylon has stated.

Plans for the new library have already been considered at Ennis Town Council and by councillors of the Ennis Area Electoral Committee and it has been decided that Ennis Town Council is to take the lead role in the proposed development on a 0.3 acre site at the edge of the Post Office Field.

Speaking at a recent meeting of Ennis Town Council, Councillor Frankie Neylon insisted that if a decision was made to develop part of the field then a plan for the rest of the area must be put in place. "I would rather see a daycare centre for the elderly people of the town on the site, these people built this town. I have nothing against the library, but if the library goes ahead on 0.3 acres, I would ask that it be considereed that around 0.2 acres be set aside for the elderly people of this town," he said.

Councillor Tommy Brennan stated that other sites in the town could be used to house a daycare centre, suggesting the scout hall and the CYMS Hall.

Town Manager, Tom Coughlan, stated that the library and the possibility of a daycare centre were two separate issues. "At the moment we have the opportunityy to do something about the library, we are not proposing the rezoning of all of the Post Office Field. There is an opportunity for funding for the library now and if we don't go after this we could lose it", he said.

However, he stated that he would be happy to enter further discussions with interested groups in relation to the issue of providing a daycare centre.
