Ground Up Artists' Collective Gets Space Shuttle

Clare Champion, Friday, 29th June 2007

The Ground Up Artists' Collective has been awarded the space shuttle - a multi-functional creative box sent temporarily into orbit to outside locations to be used by interdisciplinary artist groups and community organisations and initiatives.

The collective will use the shuttle as temporary public art space and a platform for discussion about the rural context. The collective has arisen from the Ground Up programme devised by the Arts Office of Clare County Council and is comprised of artists who have participated in the programme including an artist based in Hungary. Collective member Fiona Woods will use the space shuttle as part of her residency in North Tipperary.

The primary aim of the Ground Up Artists' Collective is to develop contexts for the presentation of art in the rural environment, bringing art processes to the heart of rural communities. "One of the obstacles we encounter in our work is the lack of public space in the rural context. The space shuttle will function as a temporary public space and allow the collective to carry out work in most locations extending our reach to a wider rural audience", explained Fiona.

All the activities programmed for the space shuttle will be context specific and will include discursive projects, exchange events, exhibits, workshops, film shows, consultation events, works commissioned especially for the space and many more.
