Clare Champion, Friday, 2nd March 2007
Throughout our history, our love of learning and libraries has been well documented. Today, libraries in Ireland are flourishing and on March 5th - 11th, Library Ireland Week will take place throughout the country to celebrate the important role libraries play in our lives.
Organised by the Library Association of Ireland, the week also provides an opportunity to highlight the work of the librarian and information professional in public, academic and special libraries. In our information-rich society, it is the librarian or information professional who organises and manages information on our behalf, making it available and easily accessible to us, the user.
A huge variety of events is planned for the week in public, college and special libraries, targeting all tastes and ages.
According to the most recent figures, about 20% of the population are registered members of the public library system. There are about 12 million visits to Irish public libraries each year with almost 14.3 million items issued.
For further information on events in their area, members of the public are encouraged to log on to the special Library Ireland Week website at www.libraryirelandweek.ie.
