Library on a Mission

Clare Champion, Friday, 21st July 2006

Clare County Library is inviting all its young members to join in this summer's Reading Mission. If you would like to embark on this mission, your first step is a visit to your local library and become a reading agent.

For the mission, children are asked to read 10 books during the months of July and August from a list of recommended authors available in all branch libraries in the county. This year's authors include Terry Deary, Oisin McGann, Darren Shan, Eoin Colfer and the multi-award-winning Kate Thompson. Alternatives to the list can also be chosen to satisfy individual needs and tastes in books. Certificates of merit will be presented to all children who complete the scheme in the autumn.

And to help children complete their task, this year the library has joined forces with The Reading Agency in Britain to supply Reading Mission packs to participating children. The mission pack will recommend useful websites to visit to find out what fellow reading agents have been up to. Children can also log on to find out more about your favourite authors. It also offers some testing challenges in the form of picture sudoku puzzles, code crackers and missions to test your powers of observation.

This summer's reading scheme to promote books and reading during the school holidays is now in its fifth year.
