A New Chapter in Library Service

The official opening of Lisdoonvarna Library took place on Wednesday last week. Based in the building of the Iron and Magnesia wells, the new premises has a valuable stock of books with strong focus being placed on the young reader. Internet facilities will also be available there. This valuable amenity to the town has been made possible through a partnership involving Lisdoonvarna Community Council Ltd., FÁS/Ces, Clare County Council and the Clare Library services.

The renovation work has been carried out by FÁS/Ces participants with materials being provided through Clare County Council. The official opening ceremony was performed by the Chairman of Clare County Council, Seán Hillery. Also present were the North Clare County Councillors, Clare County Manager, William Moloney, Regional Manager for FÁS, Donal Griffin and County Librarian, Noel Crowley.

Marian O'Callaghan, Chairperson of Lisdoonvarna Community Council, praised the work which had been carried out in a true spirit of partnership and stressed the importance of this new asset to the town. She presented the Council Chairman with a crystal paperweight depicting the town crest and motto.

The temporary opening hours are on Tuesday from 10:00am to 7:30pm. A new Branch Librarian is to be appointed following which the library will be open for 15 hours weekly.


The Merriman Summer School for the year 2000 will be held in Lisdoonvarna. An accommodation list is being prepared and this will be made available to Merriman members and to those who will attend the Winter School which is being held in Waterford. Those wishing to have their names, etc. on the accommodation list should contact the CES office at 7074801 with the relevant details as soon as possible. First Aid Classes commence at Lisdoonvarna Secondary School this week and will be held on Tuesday nights at 8:00pm. These classes are being offered through Clare Civil Defence.


Application forms, maps and full details re the town renewal scheme are available from the CES office, Sulphur Hill, Tel. 7074801. Forms must be returned to planning consultant, Tom McGahon, by Monday, 8th November.
