Picture This, the Mayor helps young readers

Clare Champion, Friday, 14th March 2003

Mayor of Clare, Councillor Richard Nagle, recently presented copies of Picture This - a guide to choosing books for young children - to Dr. Kyran Kennedy, Director, Clare Education Centre for distribution to primary schools throughout the county.

Published by Clare County Library in association with the National Reading Initiative this book is ideally suited to parents and teachers who wish to share everyday experiences in story with young children. The stories help illustrate the ordinary childhood experiences through a combination of words and pictures in a way that will appeal to parents and children alike. Short reviews of the chosen titles are arranged under themed headings such as Growing Up and Books to Make You Laugh. Other categories include Fears and Anxieties and there is also a selection of picture books in the Irish language. Assistant Librarian, Patricia Fitzgerald selected and reviewed the picture books and Senior Library Assistant, Jackie Dermody-O'Brien was responsible for the design and layout of the publication.

Since publication, the book has received excellent reviews and has been purchased by libraries and bookshps in Ireland and in the U.K. The following review appeared in Books Ireland, May 2002, "Lavish is the only word for this very well-produced guide, in which book covers are reproduced in full colour and occupying a whole page apiece with comments on each book and its target readership".
