Potty for Potter in the Library

Clare Champion, Friday, 20th July 2007

Harry Potter will once again weave his magical spell on Shannon this Friday, to coincide with the release of the final book in the hit series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The Sean Lemass Library in Shannon, along with other libraries around the county, are marking the publication with drama workshops. Run by Ciara McParland of CBF Rap Workshop, the event will bring 30 children on an imaginary journey to the world of Harry Potter and his life at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Through role-playing, storytelling, drama, quizzes and games, children will be encouraged to explore and dramatise the books characters.

A fancy dress competition will also be held and children are asked to come in their most creative Harry Potter-linked costumes. The workshop will take place at the Sean Lemass Library at 2pm on Friday. The event is aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 13 years.

In addition to the Harry Potter event, there is a wide-ranging schedule of events to keep children busy and content at the Shannon Library during the summer. Next Tuesday at 4pm, the library is holding a tots time fun event, including stories, crafts and games for children aged between 4 and 6 years. On Wednesday at 3pm, there will be an art workshop with artist Rachel Murphy for ages 7 to 12 years. The following day at 4pm, there will be an arts and crafts session for 7 to 12 year-olds.

Next weeks children's library events finish with a presentation on Irish bats, through pictures and sound, with conservation ranger, David Lyons. This will be held at 2pm and is suitable for children aged 7 years and over. The following Tuesday, July 31 at 3pm, there will be an art workshop, again with artist Rachel Murphy, suitable for children aged between 7 and 12 years. The next day will see children aged 9 to 12 attend a kids Book Club at 4pm. 7 to 12 year-olds are invited to attend an arts and crafts session at 4pm on Thursday, August 2. On Tuesday, August 7, stories, crafts and games will be provided at a tots time fun session for children from 4 to 6 years of age.

Children can also take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge, The Big Wild Read, which runs until the end of August.

All events are free of charge. Booking is required for some events. Telephone 061-364266 for further information.
