Penpals Across the Pond
DeValera Public Library, Ennis
Pen Pals Across the Pond is a collaboration between DeValera Public Library in Ennis and the Bloomington Public Library in Bloomington, Illinois, USA.
Children from DeValera Library can write letters or draw pictures about anything they choose (including, but not limited to, food, books, toys, favourite past times, school, their families, etc.). The letters will be dropped into our collection box or handed in at the library desk and then mailed to Bloomington Public Library, Illinois. Bloomington Public Library has a similar box where they will collect letters to send to us. So get started on your letters and pictures! We will be displaying the letters we receive from America in DeValera Public Library.

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, Early Man tells the story of how plucky caveman Dug (Eddie Redmayne), along with sidekick Hognob, unites his tribe against the mighty Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age city in a battle to beat them at their own game. Art exhibition: 'Awakened'
Scariff Library Gallery

Tulla-based artist Henry Butler will host a new exhibition of works at Scariff Library from 3-24 November. The Limerick School of Art & Design graduate’s visual art exhibition is his first exhibition of work since returning to painting this summer after 25 years away from the easel. The show, entitled “Awakened”, also represents his first foray with acrylics having only ever worked with watercolours in the past. He describes his return to painting as being like a volcano that has been dormant for decades but is now suddenly active again. Butler’s work is varied, having a liking for seascapes and wildlife art but he is willing to tackle various subject matters. The father of three young girls works as a retail manager in Ennis and is also currently studying for a Certificate in Business in Management and Leadership in A.I.T through its Department of Lifelong Learning. There will be an official launch for this exhibition on Thursday 8th November at 6pm. Admission is free and all are welcome. Contact Scariff Library on 061 922893 for more information.

'Some Clare Women in 1918 Ireland' by Lucille Ellis

Author of 'Women of Clare' which told the story of 16 Clare women, in this talk Lucille will examine the lives of some Clare women 100 years ago. Lucille is currently involved with the RMS Leinster project and has researched the biographies of those on board on 10 October 1918 including five nurses from Co Clare. Free lecture. All are welcome. Ireland’s Ingenious Engineers Show with Scientific Sue - A Science Week 2018 event
Scariff Public Library, first show at 10.00am and second show at 11.30am

Sue McGrath otherwise known as Scientific Sue will present Ireland’s Ingenious Engineers Show exploring some of the amazing scientific discoveries and engineering feats endeavoured by Irish scientists over a period of 350 years. Children will have their curiosity stirred on Sue’s historic scientific journey and will also be encouraged to think like scientists. The show provides an opportunity to study many science concepts such as flight, the fire triangle, electricity, acid / base (alkali) reactions, neutralisation, the properties of solids, liquid and gases, periodic table, forces, pressure and energy changes whilst also providing fun ways for everyone to engage in processes such as observation, experimentation, investigation, discovery and generation of questions.

My Baby and Me

Parents and their babies, under three are invited to join Laura Barrett to share useful ideas on supporting their children’s learning. It is an opportunity for parents to meet others and to share useful ideas on life long learning for their children in a positive and friendly environment. 'The Diplomatic Soldier: Michael MacWhite and the First World War'

Scariff Library History Group will host a talk presented by Colm Madden and chaired by Dr. David Fleming, University of Limerick:
'The Diplomatic Soldier: Michael MacWhite and the First World War'. Born in 1882 in West Cork, Michael MacWhite became a civil servant, a journalist, a French Foreign Legionnaire and most significantly, Ireland's first career diplomat. To commemorate the centenary of the armistice, this talk will highlight the life of one of the most fascinating individuals in twentieth-century Ireland.

Mike Hanrahan's 'Clare: Songs of Independence - Declaration'
DeValera Public Library at 1.15pm

Mike Hanrahan's lunchtime show is based on the events and stories that created Irish songs of Independence in Clare. The show focuses on 1918 - the development of the Volunteer movement, the return of prisoners from Frongoch in Wales and the key elections in Clare leading to the creation of the first Dáil in 1919. This is the first in a planned series of shows - the future narrative will look at the War of Independence and beyond. Research, writing and performance by Mike Hanrahan. Free Event. All welcome. Film "The Theory of Everything"

In the 1960s, Cambridge University student and future physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) falls in love with fellow collegian Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). At 21, Hawking learns that he has motor neuron disease. Despite this -- and with Jane at his side -- he begins an ambitious study of time, of which he has very little left, according to his doctor. He and Jane defy terrible odds and break new ground in the fields of medicine and science, achieving more than either could hope to imagine. Cert 12.This is a free event and all are welcome. Instant Irish Workshop

Michael McCaughan, author of: ‘Coming Home: One Man’s Return to the Irish Language’ will give a free workshop at Scariff Public Library. This workshop will be a kickstarter for people who are thinking about coming back to the language (or tackling it for the first time), combining inspirational/motivational background talk about the language, how we lost it, and how we might get it back, and then, for the second part, a session which gives people some Irish to take away with them.
