The Voice of Drawing
in the Gallery at Scariff Public Library
The Voice of Drawing is a collaborative work produced by more
than a dozen participants in a scribble workshop organised by
Timothy Emlyn Jones as part of the programme of Iniscealtra
Arts Festival 2011. The title of the drawing and the workshop
reflects the theme of the Festival Voice and it comes from the
idea of finding your own voice. In this instance participants
were invited to find their own voice by means of re-acquainting
themselves with their former childhood identity by engaging
(very energetically) in childlike scribble, using graphite sticks
and paper, and the distinct frame of mind associated with it.
Participants were asked to consider how everyone is an artist
in childhood, since all children scribble, yet so few remain
artists in adulthood. In this sense the artist can be thought
of as a survivor of socialisation and schooling, and this workshop
opened this process up to all who elected to take part.
