'Exploring the Book of Kells' Nativity pages', A Talk
by Dr. Rosemary Power, Sean Lemass Public Library, Shannon 1.30pm
The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in
Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together
with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic
monks ca. 800 or earlier. It is considered a masterwork of Western
calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination.
It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure.
The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass
that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity.
The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with
the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of
humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots
and interlacing patterns in vibrant colours, enliven the manuscript's
pages. Dr. Power is eminently qualified to speak on the Book
of Kells as she has published Images as icons in the Book of
Kells. Rosemary is also an Associate Researcher of N.U.I.G.,
has published widely on medieval Ireland and Scandinavia and
on folk tradition. She is a minister in County Clare working
ecumenically on behalf of the Methodist Church and is based
at Christ Church Shannon. The talk in the library is a free
event and all are welcome.

Art in Nature, a Photographic and Painting exhibition
by Gus Ahlsved, Sean Lemass Public Library, Shannon.
Gus Ahlsved will exhibit some of his photographs and paintings
in Shannon Library in November from 13th to 30th. The collection
is called “Art in Nature”. Gus says that if we look
around us with eyes open we can see beautiful pieces of art
everywhere in nature. He has captured some of this colourful
beauty in different locations in Ireland and abroad through
the lens of his camera, and some with brushes and paint. A native
of Finland, Gus got interested in photography while still at
school. He found an old, broken camera, and decided to try and
fix it. He got it working and a new hobby was born. After he
had finished school he worked in a photo laboratory. This happened
to be the only laboratory in the country that brought colour
photography to amateur photographers when it was new and developing.
It was a very educational job for Gus. Remember, there was no
digital photography at that time. In 1978 he came to Ireland
as a tour guide and moved permanently to Shannon in 1981, and
started a Stained Glass and Picture Framing business in the
Town Centre in 1988. Gus is a founder member of the Clare Arts
and Crafts Association and has taken part in a number of exhibitions
organised by the association, and also on his own around the
country. All are welcome to visit the exhibition. It may offer
an idea for a present for family or friends, or something to
hang in the office. Part of the proceeds will go to a charitable
organisation for Christmas. The exhibition celebrates Library
Ireland Week.
