‘Claresan’ Art Exhibition by Helen Lowe
Scariff Public Library
‘Claresan’ is a name Helen Love has applied to the
county of Clare, borrowing the honorific suffix of san to show
respect from the Japanese language. The exhibition captures the
profound influence of the solitary and awe-inspiring natural seascapes,
landscape and fauna within the county. The paintings are brought
to life using oil, water, wax, tree resin, and pigment. The results
of using this combination give a three dimensional look and feel.
Her paintings have been sold across the world from Brazil, America
to Japan. She is enjoying great success with her newly commissioned
series of prints based on Quin Abbey, which is one of our great
national monuments. She currently works as an art teacher in Quin

A Passion for Books: The early letters of Nancy Nolan
to Leonard Woolf (1943-1944), a Culture Night event
De Valera Public Library, Ennis at 6.30pm
Anne Byrne, from the School of Political Science and Sociology
in NUIG, will visit the De Valera Library in Ennis to celebrate
Culture Night with a fascinating insight into the letters written
by Nancy Nolan, Dublin housewife and fan of author Virgina Woolf,
to Virginia’s husband Leonard Woolf. Nancy’s admiration
for the life and literature of Virginia Woolf first prompted
her unsolicited 4-page letter to Leonard on the 9th of February
1943, two years after the death of Virginia. Anne Byrne's interest
in what Nancy wrote about to Leonard and what circumstances
prevailed so that Nancy took up her pen and wrote that first
letter, Irish woman to English man, in the middle of World War
2, prompted Anne to look further into this unique correspondence.
This talk will consider the first year of the correspondence,
in which Nancy writes 17 letters to Leonard, sometimes twice
a month; a correspondence that is wholly concerned with a passion
for books. Anne will share her views that Mrs Nolan’s
letters to Mr Woolf might contain more than musings and were
a possible source for biographical reflection on women’s
lives in 20th century Ireland. This is a free event and all
are welcome.

‘Compostela-Field of Stars’ Art Exhibition
by Marianne Slevin
The Gallery, Scarriff Public Library
The work feature improvisations and explorations of chance in
ink and oil paint on various surfaces. They are mainly 2 dimensional
drawings and paintings, but some found and everyday objects are
turned into art objects with her use of ink. The drawings are
experimental and made using a combination of chance, intuition
and feeling. In some cases Marianne uses the elements such as
the wind or a leak in the kitchen window to create the drawings.
She also uses the ‘accidental’ in her work, such as
an ink spillage on the stone floor. Other times she devises games
of chance, rolling objects that hold meaning for her, like a fortune
teller, and drawing around them to reveal a visual map. She often
works in ways where she has very little control, and the environment
she is in, her own body and intuition have a chance to play, rather
than the decisions being made only using her head. As the philosopher
Alan Watts said, “Getting out of one’s own way”.

Clare County Library's Lusitania Exhibition
Kilrush Public Library
The Cunard passenger liner RMS Lusitania, travelling from New
York to Liverpool, was torpedoed by a German submarine off the
Old Head of Kinsale on 7th May 1915, and sank within 18 minutes.
To mark the hundredth anniversary of this tragic event Clare County
Library will display a Lusitania exhibition in several branch
libraries, and in Clare Museum, over the coming months, beginning
with a two-week display in Kilrush Library from 6th–19th
May. The sinking of the ship impacted directly on County Clare
as four of the victims and one of the survivors were natives of
the county. Also, twelve of the victims whose bodies were washed
up on the coast of Clare were interred in local graveyards. The
Lusitania exhibition moves from Kilrush Library to Kilkee Library
on 20th May. For a full schedule of the exhibition contact the
Library at 065 - 6821616 / 6846350.

World Book Night
Various branches
World Book Night is an annual celebration of reading and books
that takes place on 23 April. It sees passionate volunteers
give out hundreds of thousands of books in their communities
to share their love of reading with people who don’t read
regularly or own books. World Book Night is run by The Reading
Agency, a charity that inspires people to become confident and
enthusiastic readers to help give them an equal chance in life.
Clare County Library is honoured to have been accepted as an
institutional volunteer on behalf of World Book Night in 2015.
We have invited members of local adult literacy groups to visit
our branches in Ennis, Kilrush and Shannon where they will be
given a tour of the library, along with a free copy of either
Roddy Doyle's "Dead Man Walking" or Minette Walters'
"Chickenfeed". Both titles are from the 'Quick Reads'
series of books. The 'Quick Reads' programme supports and encourages
adult literacy and we are delighted to be able to share this
initiative as part of World Book Night. Over 50 books will be
given out to group members and an invitation to revisit their
local library as new and valued members. For more information
on World Book Night visit www.worldbooknight.org.
