Adult Film Club - ‘The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society’
Kilrush Public Library at 6.00pm

This film is based on the 2008 novel of the same name, written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. In 1946 a London-based writer begins exchanging letters with residents on the island of Guernsey, which was German-occupied during WWII. Feeling compelled to visit the island, she starts to get a picture of what it was like during the occupation. Cert 12

A Clare County Library Decade of Centenaries Lecture
"By heavens, Joe, but there are great men in Ireland still": Commandant Joseph Barrett (1888-1971) by Dr Paul O'Brien
DeValera Public Library, Ennis at 6.30pm

A talk about the recently discovered Archive of Joe Barrett of Kilrush and Darragh, Ballyea. Barrett was a member of the IRB and Irish Volunteers and served as a leader of the Mid Clare Brigade's Flying Column during the War of Independence. Paul will bring some documents from the Archive to the talk.

Celebrating Edna O'Brien's 'The Country Girls Trilogy’, a Clare County Library Special Book Club Event hosted by Dr. Tina O'Toole
Scariff Public Library, 6.30pm

Clare County Library is proud to participate in the Dublin One City One Book Festival 2019 as it celebrates the work of acclaimed Clare-born author Edna O'Brien. Library book clubs are invited to read 'The Country Girls Trilogy’ and then gather together at a special book club event in Scariff Public Library in East Clare, Edna O'Brien country, to share their views on the book on Thursday 18th April at 6.30pm. Dr Tina O'Toole will host the event and will give a talk on Edna O'Brien and her work, followed by a Q&A. Dr Tina O’Toole is a senior lecturer in English and programme director of the MA English at the University of Limerick. Dr O’Toole’s books include 'The Irish New Woman' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013); 'Women Writing War: Ireland 1880-1922' (UCD Press, 2016; co-edited with Gillian McIntosh & Muireann O’Cinnéide); and 'Irish Literature: Feminist Perspectives' (Carysfort Press, 2008; co-edited with Patricia Coughlan).This is a free event but booking is essential. Film Book Club – ‘Wonder’
