Bliain na Gaeilge Exhibition
Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon

2018 is Bliain na Gaeilge celebrating 125 years of Revival/Athbheochan 1893-1918. Bliain na Gaeilge will focus on the creativity of the language, the vibrancy of the language, the participation of the community, the value of our Gaeltachts and the revival of the language over the last 125 years. Clare County Library will display a series of bilingual stands commemorating Bliain na Gaeilge. This display contains panels on Oideachas/Teaching the Nation, Cultúr agus Tionsclaíocht/Culture and Industry, Fís Athbheochana/A Vision of Revival and Tioncar agus Tacaíocht/American Influence and Support. This exhibition will be shown in Shannon Public Library during the month of April.

This display contains panels on Cearta Teanga/Civil Rights, Timireacht/Organising, Athrú Teanga/A Language Shift, Craoltóireacht/Broadcasting and Teicneolaíocht na hAthbheochana/The Technology of Revival. They can be viewed in DeValera Public Library, Ennis during the month of April.

The Book of Happiness: A Creative Writing Workshop for Writers - a Healthy Ireland at Your Library Event.
Scariff Public Library at 11am

This two-hour creative writing workshop for adults with writer Helen Blackhurst explores the idea of happiness in fiction. How do we write happiness? When we start with Happiness as an initial seed of inspiration, where does it lead us? In the labyrinth of creativity, is there a place for the lighter side of human experience?
Using a range of creative writing techniques, the workshop will explore notions of Happiness and how we can capture the essence of this experience for the reader. Free event but booking is essential. Contact Scariff Public Library on (061) 922893 for booking and further information.

'Twelve months - twelve plants' a talk by Carl Wright
DeValera Public Library from 7.30 - 9.30 pm

Carl Wright is a known expert speaker at Garden and Flower Clubs all over the country. At this event he talks about twelve plants that are suitable and good for a west of Ireland garden. Coinciding with Clare Garden Festival a selection of gardening books will be displayed at the DeValera Public Library from Monday 23rd April to Monday 30th April.

This month we are watching 'Hidden Figures'. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture, 'Hidden Figures' tells the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) - brilliant African-American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn, a stunning achievement that turned around the Space Race. The visionary trio crossed all gender and racial lines and inspired generations. Cert PG. Tea and coffee provided.

Poetry Day Ireland takes place on Thursday 26th April 2018 and the theme is Poetry Surprises! Whether you share a poem, read a poem, or programme your own event, everyone is invited to join in and celebrate. Clare County Library will mark the day by hosting a poetry event in Shannon Library. Our local Shannon Creative Writing Group will read their self-penned poetry and also a selection of their favourite poems. This is a free event and all are welcome.
The students from Gaelscoil Donncha Rua, Shannon are also busy composing some poems as Gaeilge and will join us on the day to read their work.

Movie Screening – “Made in Dagenham”
Killaloe Public Library at 7.30 pm

Made in Dagenham is a 2010 British film directed by Nigel Cole. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Geraldine James, Rosamund Pike, Andrea Riseborough, Jaime Winstone, Daniel Mays and Richard Schiff. It dramatises the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968 that aimed for equal pay for women. The film's theme song, with lyrics by Billy Bragg, is performed by Sandie Shaw, herself a native of the area and a former Ford Dagenham clerk. Cert 15. This is a free event and all are welcome.
