Kilrush Union 1849 - 1851
A major project undertaken by CLASP was based on the Famine
experience in Kilrush, Co. Clare. Kilrush shares with Skibbereen and Westport
the distinction of being one of the three worst hit areas during the Great
Famine. The project involved reproducing the Board of Guardians Minute Books
for the Kilrush Union, 1849. The Board of Guardians were the administrators
of the Workhouse, and the daily records of the house were written down in
the Minute Books.
The pains-taking work of deciphering the hand-written
minute books as well as the transfer of this material into computers took
two and a half years. The Minute Books also contain numerous tables which
provide us with many statistics which range from the number of deaths
in the Workhouse in a given month to the amount of meal the workhouse
received. The results of
all this work was publihsed on the library website as "Kilrush
Union Minute Books 1849"
