We are sometimes kinder than we need be to locally produced histories, feeling that shortage of funds or of time or of an appreciation of exactly what constitutes history or what goes to make a real book may be invincible handicaps, and knowing buyers and readers will be as tolerant as us. No tolerance at all is needed by this fine book except perhaps for the title, from a contemporary quotation "Gaunt famine has already spread her sable wings over the land," which poetic euphemism for an ugly reality falls oddly on modern ears. It looks a very well researched, digested and written account of the famine in the worst affected part of the country, with sources, bibliography, index, illustrations.
