The Strangers Gaze:
Travels in County Clare: 1534-1950
Edited by Brian O Dalaigh
Edited by Brian O Dalaigh, this is an
absorbing book in which you'll find an enormous amount of information.
Beginning with a letter from Connor O'Brien to the Holy Roman Emperor
Charles V, and ending with a piece written by Frank O'Connor in 1950,
many of the extracts give the outsider's view of Ireland, and of County
Clare in particular, through the centuries.
The book is published by CLASP to mark
the centenary of local government and what an excellent decision it was.
The four members of the board of CLASP linked up with FÁS and its
training programme to produce this wonderful book, which is excellent
value at £27.00.
Even if you knew where to look for the
material collected here, it would take the general reader a long time
to find it. You'll learn a lot about events and people in the past and
you really don't have to have any connection with County Clare to appreciate
to The Strangers Gaze
