The Clare Anthology

Chapters and Worse
The great and the good of Irish life (well, some of them) choose their favourite books of 2000

Brian Farrell, Broadcaster
The Sunday Tribune, 31 December 2000

"Another headline for some enterprising publisher is the latest in the impressive series from Clasp, the publishing arm of Clare County Council. The Clare Anthology, edited by Kieran Sheedy, mixes visitors and writers native to Clare in a pot-pourri ranging across the rich heritage and textured daily life of the Banner County. The selection crosses from Petrie’s visit to Kilfenora in 1821 to a 1987 account of the Willie Clancy School (that still goes from strength to strength), from the Armada to the ESB’s taming of the Shannon, from Christy Moore’s riotous celebration of Lisdoonvarna, to those two flamboyant fathers who left their mark in Ennistymon. Few counties can compete with Clare’s heritage but they might all copy its example and produce their own libraries of their native place."
