Her Inspector Coffin series is set in an imaginary London, where the places don’t quite exist, yet that feel more real than the city they pretend to comprise. Coffin’s manor is an area of London you won’t actually find, somewhere close to the Isle of Dogs. He lives in a flat in a converted church that, like every building described in the novels, seems haunted with essences and memories distilled from several hundred years of bloody history. Butler has written more than 50 books, and the Inspector Coffin tales bear such titles as A Dark Coffin and A Coffin on Murder Street. Butler also writes as Jennie Melville.
