Cross is the pseudonym of Carolyn Heilbrun, a professor at Columbia University, and her novels are academic mysteries at their best. Published in 1964, In the Last Analysis was the first of a series as sophisticated and coolly intelligent as its heroine, Professor Kate Fansler. Her subject is literature, and the novels are full of admiration for writers such as Virginia Woolf, Iris Murdoch, Dorothy L. Sayers and W.H. Auden. Cross's work is vividly expressive of the frustration felt by a civilised faminist battling with pompous male colleagues, but she is no zealot and has allowed Fansler to marry Assistant District Reed Amhearst. He is as tolerant and generous as she is. Other titles include An Imperfect Spy and The Players Come Again.
