The heroine of Donald's novels is a wonderful sleuth named Alex Tanner. Alex is a highly compentent and self-assured freelance television researcher who is less confident when it comes to her private life. As the child of a single mother with mental problems, Alex was a frequently fostered child, making her wary of letting anyone get too close. Main characters who recur in the series are Alex's neighbour, Polly, a deceptively naive model, and the television producer Barty O'Neil with whom Alex tentatively starts a romantic relationship. Nick, a teenage girl who would rather be homeless than fostered, is a fascinating sidekick, introduced in The Glass Ceiling. Without pulling punches, the novels are full of wit and humour, offering readers some superb character studies. The most recent offering is The Loop.
