Ed McBain

The police procedural was redefined by the first of 87th Precinct novels, Cop Hater in 1956. Rather than following the investigations of one or two characters, McBain used a kind of rolling repertory of detectives whose lives are followed from book to book. His influence is evident in many later crime novels, and in TV series from Hill Street Blues to The Bill. The 87th Precinct books are short and often brutal, but tightly plotted and written with ferocious intensity. They are prevented from being gloomy by the author’s quirky humour. Mcbain also writes a series about the Florida-based attorney Matthew Hope, and also writes under his own name Evan Hunter.
