Ripley is known mainly for his Angel books, though he is also a critic and mean hand with the short story. Fitzroy Maclean Angel is a London wide boy with discernible way of earning a living. He is wickedly funny, malicious, amoral. Endlessly involved in scams, one of his main quests is to get into bed with the glamorous lesbian who lives downstairs. Angel, you see, is not PC. He lives in Hackney and has a demanding set of friends. There have been eight Angel novels and the most recent, That Angel Look, is reputed to be the last. The books are fast, funny and full of one-liners. If there is a criticism it is that the plots are surrendered to zany characters and quips.
