When he died a 71-year-old alcoholic in 1977, not a single Jim Thompson novel remained in print. Yet in his time, the legendary chronicler of shiftless, rootless American low-life had seen several of his novels turned into films - notably The Getaway. Since his lonely death, Stephen Freares' filming of The Grifter’s brought Thompson back to fame. But fittingly for a Jim Thompson story, it came late, too late.
