Island Cross-Talk: Pages from a Diary by Tomás O’Crohan

Translated by Tim Enright

In 1953, when the Great Blasket was abandoned forever to nature, Tomás O’Crohan wrote “The Like Of Us Will Never Be Again”. Island Cross-Talk is a translation of Tomás O’Crohan’s diary, Allagar na hInse, another great book from the Blasket Island Library. Tomás O’Crohan was unable to read or write until middle aged when he was helped to write down events in the daily life of the Blasket Islanders, by Brian O’Ceallaigh, a Killarney-born teacher. This translation by another Kerry teacher, Tim Enright of Listowel, allows us to enjoy Tomás’s experiences, the hardships and dangers of the island, along with the deep friendships and humour of the Islanders.
