Age of Iron by J. M. Coetzee

The upheaval of the 1980's in South Africa is presented through the eyes of the highly articulate and terminally ill Mrs Curran who grapples with her own mortality and the death throes of the apartheid regime. The sentences are perfect, the tone is relentless and unforgiving, and the sense of despair, both public and private, fills the book with a grief which is almost overwhelming.
J. M. Coetzee was born in Cape Town. He won the Booker Prize in 1983.
