This novel centres on the tensions surrounding Moran, a complicated, unhappy man, hardened by his experience as a Republican fighter, and unable to take responsibility for his difficult relationship with his sons. The book is remarkable for the plainness of its prose, its seamless structure and its careful delineation of the dark forces which gather around family relationships.
