Beloved by Toni Morrison
Random House Group 1997

It is 1873 in Ohio and the era of slavery is coming to an end. Our heroine, Sethe, is torn with memories of the terrible past, the petty cruelties of life as a slave and then the particular viciousness of certain events that are impossible to forget. There is an extraordinary skill in the way the narrative goes back over events of the past while focusing also on the domestic minutiae, small moments of tension, and the power and problems of love between people who are enslaved and exploited.
Toni Morrison was born in Ohio. Beloved won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and in 1993 Morrison won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
