The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald

Set in late 18th century Germany and based on the life of the poet and philosopher Novalis, this novel tells the story of the idealistic young man's love for a 13-year-old girl who falls terribly ill. The style is elliptical and spare, but the novel covers a vast canvas - the country and times they live in, philosophy, medicine, domestic detail, and longings that go beyond words.
Penelope Fitzgerald was born in England.
