East of Eden by John Steinbeck

This is the story of two families of settlers in California but it is also the story of settlement itself, of the formation of the modern United States. It is a rambling family saga with memorable characters and wonderfully set scenes. In the novel there is a constant struggle between light and darkness, water and drought, men and women, father and son, and brother and brother.
John Steinbeck was born in California. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
