Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard

This is the story of Jim, a young boy separated from his parents during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai. He spends the war in an internment camp and on death marches. The horrors and privations of the camp as seen through the eyes of a child are presented unflinchingly and in mesmerising detail. Without any heroics, this is one of the truly great novels about war.
J.G. Ballard was born in Shanghai.
