The Folding Star by Alan Hollinghurst

Edward Manners – thirty-three and disaffected – escapes to a Flemish city in search of a new life. Almost immediately he falls in love with one of his pupils and is introduced to the twilight world of the 1890s painter Orst. There is a mellow beauty to the form and structure of this novel: at the same time it is candid, comic and contemporary with a sly sense of the absurd.
Alan Hollinghurst was born in Gloucestershire.
