Injury Time by Beryl Bainbridge

The characters attending a dinner party hosted by Binny are the subject of this comic novel. Binny is Simpson’s mistress of several years, and it is Simpson, his wife Muriel and his accountant Edward who are guests for dinner. Into the disastrous dinner party erupts a gang of gunmen and marriages and affairs, topsy-turvy before, disintegrate in the chaos that follows. Sentimentality withers under the authors ironic, detached gaze, but canniness and black comedy flourish, as does laughter in this wily account of the ungovernable precariousness of love.
Beryl Bainbridge was born in Liverpool.
