Lanark: A Life in Four Books by Alasdair Gray

Lanark is a novel seething with political rage, a modern vision of hell. It tells the story of Duncan Thaw, a young Glasgow artist. Thaw’s Glasgow is a place of tenements, canals and middens, and Thaw himself, a Fifties man, common and depressed. His travels give rise to some of the best thinking about citizenship ever to appear in a novel.
Alasdair Gray was born in Glasgow.
