Lord of the Flies by William Golding

When a group of schoolboys are stranded on an island following a plane crash, their civilized values give way to superstition and savagery, leading to murder before they are rescued. Golding's vivid description of the primitive and savage New World that the boys create is most convincing.
William Golding was born in Cornwall. He won the Booker Prize in 1980 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983.
