The Murderer by Roy Heath
Macmillan 1999

In this powerful novel, murder and mental breakdown are dealt with coldly and dispassionately. The book is set in Guyana and tells the story of a man who grows up humiliated by his fiercely puritanical mother and undermined by the successes of his older brother. He moves away to the anonymity of a small harbour town where he meets Gemma, a woman who unwittingly fuels his despair and drives him to an act of brutal violence. The gap between the old-fashioned gracefulness of the prose and the pure Guyanese vernacular of the dialogue makes the novel chilling and tense and deeply original.
Roy Heath was born in British Guiana.
