Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

The heroine of this novel has been adopted by a most religious, and neurotic, lady in the North of England. The story takes us through the ordinary yet comic experiences of her childhood and into her adulthood. She suffers from a mixture of religious fervour and lesbian passion. The tone of the novel is a mixture of innocent wonder, shrewd memories and sharp observations.
Jeanette Winterson was born in Lancashire. This book won the Whitbread Award for a first novel in 1985.
