Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey

Oscar and Lucinda is a daring, intense and original love story, and a historical tour de force that is also powerfully contemporary. An epic account of mid-nineteenth century life in England and Australia, it follows Oscar Hopkins, the frail son of a fundamentalist member of the Plymouth Brethren. The other central figure, Lucinda Leplastrier, is an orphaned heiress, the daughter of an early feminist.
Peter Carey was born in Victoria. Oscar and Lucinda won the 1988 Booker Prize.
