Owls do Cry by Janet Frame

This novel fictionalises the author's childhood in New Zealand as one of the siblings of the impoverished Withers family. The children are dirty and poor. Their childhood memories echo with tragic clarity through the adult lives each chooses. Frame has a relish for words and for the small details that identify an event.
Janet Frame was born in Dunedin.
