The Reivers by William Faulkner
Random House Group 1996

Based in the American south in the 1960's, the novel tells the story of a journey to Memphis of our narrator, an eleven year old boy, his grandfather's black servant and a man called Ned who is not entirely sane. Here he mixed with people outside his own class, witnessed confusion, homesickness, possible disaster, a racism which was new to him and an extraordinary amount of high-jinks. When he gets home to his ordered upbringing, full of old patrician values, he has changed.

William Faulkner was born in Mississippi. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. The Reivers won the Pulitzer Prize.
