Saville by David Storey
Random House Group 1998

Saville is an account of English life from the 1930’s on, told through the story of young Colin Saville, a miner’s son, living in a worn-out mining community in south Yorkshire. At first there is a sense of triumph, especially for his father, as he rises in the world by way of grammar school and college. Gradually the education he earns removes him from his family and his community, leaving him feeling spiritually destitute and bitter, still held against his will in the place that made him.
David Storey was born in Wakefield. Saville won the Booker Prize in 1976.
