The Siege of Krishnapur by J.G. Farrell

The novel is set in 1857 in Krishnapur where the British community carries on a serene existence, ignoring rumours of trouble among the native troops elsewhere in Hindustan. There is an odd and original mixture of melancholy and hilarity in the book and Farrell manages a light tone while remaining alert to the weight of his subject, resulting in a brilliant dark comedy. His attention to detail gives the novel credibility without overburdening it.
J.G. Farrell was born in Liverpool. The Siege of Krishnapur won the Booker Prize in 1973.
