The Sportswriter by Richard Ford

Frank Bascombe, the narrator of this novel, is struggling for equilibrium in the aftermath of divorce and bereavement. A wistful, hopeful man adrift in his own humanity, he takes us through three days of reflection and meditation as he considers his life. The events of these three days, and a lifetime in memory and flashback, are brilliantly and memorably rendered.
Richard Ford was born in Mississippi in 1944. Independence Day, the sequel to The Sportswriter, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
