The Sword of Honour Trilogy by Evelyn Waugh

A beautifully structured and melancholy account of England and the Second World War, this book also contains moments of pure hilarity. It follows Guy Crouchback through many escapades during the war, when Guy's faith is put to the test on the field of battle and in his own intimate relationships. His character works superbly in the book because his loneliness and sadness are absorbed by the war, and his personality undergoes many changes.
Evelyn Waugh was born in London.
